I live by Jimmy's Car Lot on Wooster Rd W. I am sick and tired of getting chased by 2 large black dogs, on his lot. I have pepper sprayed one of them. I have also reported them to the police. They are still allowed to run loose. I don't go on his property. I have walk in what might be called the devil strip, or the st. These dogs have come off the lot. The next time I get chased, I will have a talk with the city safety director, or the county dog warden. There is a leash law in Barberton. These dogs need to kept under physical restraint.

Congratulations to the Magics girls soccer team for a fantastic victory over Norton Saturday. Both teams played their hearts out. Also, thanks to the many BHS students who showed up to support their Lady Magics. What a shame that the Norton administrator in charge told them to "shut up" while they were supporting their team. The Barberton kids did nothing inappropriate. Telling a group of students to "shut up" however was highly inappropriate. Again, congrats Magics!

Wow- You complain when you don't know what is going on in the schools & now you complain when you are called & told - Make up your mind - i think that it is a great tool & should be used more often - maybe you prefer texting??

Submitted By: On the school calls Submitted: 9/7/2010
I agree too, BHS calls for reasons other than emergencies. And of course they call at dinner time. It is too much like telemarketing. Also I had two children in the school and for awhile got two calls for the same reason. I don't even know who to complain to. I want to be notified if the BHS is closed, not for any other reason.

I have to agree, the schools are using the system too much. Individual teachers are using it as well. It gets to the point where you don't even listen to the messages because there are too many pointless ones.It is a great system but should not be abused.

Submitted By: school calling... Submitted: 9/5/2010
I belive the schools are calling homes excessively. Our phone rigs 3-4 times a week. It is only the begining of the year. I was told that the schools would call if there was an emergency, or if schools were going to be closed. I was not told that the schools would call to promote the football games, and a raffle, and tell us that Barberton schools were rated excellent. In addition, the schools would call to remind students that school was starting, and to bring their supplies, and the list has gone on. The schools are taking advantage of a system that was designed for EMERGENCY USE! I understand that we can "opt out", but that means if there is an emergency, we won't recieve the call. Barbeton schools, please refrain, and only use the system for what its for...EMERGENCIES!!!

The Norton girls head soccer coach has been stating some misinformation in the press and I think the record should be set straight. The 2009 girls varsity record of 7-7-1 is NOT the best in Norton girls soccer history. In 2006 their record was 10-3-4. A few other years their record also surpassed the 2009 record. Also, the 2009 girls team did make it to the second round of playoffs, but that also was NOT the first time that happened in Norton girls soccer history. In 2006, the team beat Wellington in the first round of playoffs to make it to the second round. This coach should check the facts before stating untruths just to make herself look good. The 2006 girls and their coaches deserve the truth to be told.

These days we got kids who have this "sense of entitlement", they want to play sports and be on a team but do not want the work involved with it. Well kids, there is this thing called "work" in every aspect of life, from studies to sports and employment, get used to it. You want a starting position, you have to work for it. you get out what you put in, put in nothing and get nothing, give 100 percent and reap the rewards.

I agree. this is not the time to be raising taxes. I lost my job, my husband's pay has been cut. everyone I know, has been affected income wise by the ecomony...and loosing thier houses because of loans and taxes! I have 4 houses on my road alone up on the sherif sale empty and 4 more for sale and 3 just sitting empty with 3 feet tall grass. our street is turning into a ghost town! if you raise taxes and people have to loose thier homes, then the Schools gets Nothing! if these parents who must have wonderful paying secure jobs, want these new schools then, make THEM start PAYING a monthly FEE to enroll Each Child. the rest of us, should not have to be worried about loosing our roofs over our heads, because Barberton or Norton wants to keep up with the Joneses!

hey..how about that poor water quality alert in our bills this month?!I hate the taste of our over chemically treated water to begin with and buy bottled. I think we should be able to turn in our bottled water reciepts, and get 50% credit on our water bill! bad enough rates are so high, but then have it such poor quality, and yeh I saw the part that said it may or may not hurt you, well the tobacco industry said nicotine couldn't hurt you either! I spend $12 a week on bottled SPRING water. and even if some of it is just purified other water, at least it doesn't taste or smell so bad and has to meet higher standards than obviously Barberton's lack of controling our drinking water supply quality.

The schools should be rated as excellent. I have been a homeowner here for 10 years and my propert tax has doubled!! I don't have kids but believe they should have a nice school system, BUT...NO MORE TAXES for these "Cadillac" school buildings. I heard from a teacher once that the school system tremendously under estimated the operating costs for these buildings. Remember this at voting time, any increase is covering up their poor budget plans.

For every 10,000 people born in the USA, 70,000 kittens and puppies are born. the federal government should have a mandatory FREE spay and neuter program, for every cat or dog, except those owners - kennels okayed by strict guidelines to breed. it may sound like communism, but until we become responsible pet owners..and I always have mine fixed, measures must be taken. too many of our furry friends must suffer the fate of being stray, or go to the pound. Everyone likes cute puppies and kittens but we created this HUGE problem.

I have question to the comment made on this views line, in regards to B.A.L.L. having elections in September, where do we find the date and time to attend this session? I have searched the website and no information is listed for elections. My next question is to B.A.L.L., why do the fields on Robinson Ave look better now that the season is over and the tournaments have started? Is there new bleachers back there? This season for me and my players was very disheartening due to several factors that I will not air in this forum. All I can say is for “new” players coming to this league, review all your options before you determine where you and your children will play, find out from the league where your $85.00 goes, because no one from B.A.L.L. can seem to provide us paying parents with that answer.

Barberton Beautification You are wrong about the unemployment and food stamps. I don't qualify for food stamps You are also wrong if you think I can spend what little unemployment gives on paint. I also want to mention I have no insurance and do not qualify for medicaid nor medicare. I have HBP and asthma and cannot scrape paint in this heat.So "just manual labor" is a BIG problem for me. You are right we are not ignorant we are just in a hard place right now. Peeling paint is the least of my worries. I have lived in Barberton my entire life and how dare you imply I have no city pride because I cannot scrape and paint at this time. You seem to be out of touch with reality of others, this is not a sob story and I do not drink beer nor smoke.

If your out of work, you are probably drawing $400/wk min from un-employment and some food stamps.... majority of the readers out here are not that ignorant and are tired of the sob stories. Start with cutting back on beer, cigs and pizza. TAKE SOME MAGIC CITY PRIDE AND JUST DO IT!

FIXING HOMES: You can always check with NCS of Barberton (Neighborhood Conservation Services). They were always around a few years ago to have people apply for funds for repairs. Plus, there are loans, but, if you aren't working, check with NCS first and see what your options are. You know, most people took advantage of the hail storm we had a couple years ago and it was well worth it. I got a new roof because of hail damage to it and paid out of pocket a total of 480 dollars. Insurance covered the rest!

I recently received one of those friendly letters from the city stating I need to make repairs to my home. I live on a clean, well kept dead end street in a good neighborhood. My house is by far a dumpy looking one. Yes it needs a little TLC, some painting, windows, things like that. They have advised me that if the repairs are not made in 30 days we will be fined. I thought this was designed to target "slum lords" in Barberton that don't like to do maintain their property. My husbands employer moved to Mexico in May '09, he has been searching for a job since. If I cannot afford to buy new windows and siding, how do they think that I can afford a nice little fine from the city. Even better, most of the things they complained about are in the back of the house and cannot be seen from the street, other than the trim around my windows. The wood needs replaced, it's not as simple as a coat of paint or it would have already been done, and the siding is asbestos, some are cracked and broken, you cannot fix or replace these. So, where does this leave the Barberton citizens that are financially struggling and are unable to make repairs the city is demanding of us? If I cannot afford repairs, do you honestly think I can afford fines and court costs? There are no organizations to help with this type of thing either. Some cities offer programs where you get the monies to make repairs and as long as you remain in the home for so many years it is not required to be paid back. Stark county, Cuy. county, and I know that the city of Akron used to offer this. So maybe Barberton needs to come up with something if they are going to require your house look a certain way. I think it's ridiculous. And where does it stop?

I stand corrected, my niece has three cats, all kill birds but only one eats them. None kill mice or rats. I am still wondering if 'animal helper' is taking other peoples pets and having them destroyed or fixed. animal helper wrote,"Why Yes I have caught many cats in a live trap and take them to vet so they won't reproduce." That really bothers me.

Submitted By: Steve D Submitted: 8/7/2010
CATS: Correction! Pet cats will eat a whole bird. My parents have a pet cat that they let outside once in a while and he catches and eats whole birds. Kind of gross, but hey, it is what they do. When setting traps for the ferals, you set the trap early in the morning for a few hours before it gets real hot out so you do not catch skunks, etc. It is never recommended to set a trap at night because of catching other animals. If you live in a neighborhood with a feral population, believe me, you will soon find out what cats are feral and those that aren't just from observation alone. Pet cats will approach you most of the time, ferals will not.

Three abandoned homes sit within two blocks of my house. One is on my block, and it has been sitting empty for three years. The front yard rarely gets mowed, I don't think the back gets mowed at all. The other two are a block up from me, one looks the part with badly kept lawn and the other is in hiding. That is; someone is mowing the lawn regularly, but it is still empty. What is getting me hot? The city sent me a letter about the appearance of MY house. They say it needs a paint job. I'm wanting them to come out and show me where it needs painted. Then I'd ask them about the abandoned house down the street. Who's going to bring that place up to speed? There's no use bringing any other house on the street up to code if that house is just going to sit there and rot.

Submitted By: Cats damage! Submitted: 8/5/2010
I do not hate cats. I hate the fact that people expect me to accept that they let their cats run loose because they believe it is cruel to leash cats or keep them in the house. You say you trap cats and take them to the vet. Are you sure they are homeless? Are you trapping peoples pets and paying for them to be fixed or having them destroyed? Probably a law against that. Also a dropped off pet is not the same as feral. Trapping a feral cat is not easy. If you manage to trap it good luck getting it out of the trap in one piece. Feral cats usually eat what they catch.Pet cats kill birds because to them it is fun they never eat them, they loose interest in them once the bird quits moving. I find the dead birds in my yard and on my porch. I am tried of my porch smelling like cat pee because the neighbors cat thinks it owns MY porch. I also do not think it is a good idea for people to leave food out for homeless cats. In my area it ends up attracting rats, skunks, opossums and raccoons. And don't start telling me "you hate all animals"..Wild animals belong in the wild not walking up on your porch for a free meal. People please stop leaving food out for cats. Raccoon droppings can cause pets diseases like distemper. Skunks can have rabies and who wants rats around? I have seen cats run from adult rats. Leash laws for cats is a good idea or better yet keep cats in the house. You keep doing what you think is right and I'll keep chasing the cats from my yard. I'm not setting a trap for a cat and ending up with a skunk.

Yes, it is very hard to catch a feral cat. I tried to get a queen to come to a trap I set out here for a week so I can get her to the vet and spayed so she does not have any more litters. Funny, she was nowhere to be seen when the trap was out but showed up after I returned it. I have gotten some of them to get close to me, but not trying to feed them or anything. That is the worst thing to do or else they will stick around where the food source is at. Naturally, they will kill birds and mice because that is what they do. I have my three cats inside at all times because they don't need to be out running around with the wild cats. Besides, they have a safer life inside and can sit in the window if they want a taste of outside.

To "Just Wondering" - If you are talking about Barberton, we don't need another school levy to vote on. We're still paying on school levies from 30 years ago. Take a look at the Summit County web site and click the link to "where your taxes go" when you look up your property on there. They break down exactly where your property taxes are going. Besides, we closed a bunch of schools, so operating costs should be way down.

To animal helper, Yes some people neglect their cats. They don't feed them properly and I doubt they have been to a vet. Who are you talking to when you ask,"Do you ever think of helping by giving them medical attention, flea prevention, spay or neuter to stop overpopulation?" The neglectful owner or those who complain about these pest? Compassion pfft! I want these pest cats to stay out of my garden stop scent marking my porch. They also got into a cardinals nest and killed the babies right from the nest. They sit in the sunflowers and catch and kill goldfinches and at the bird feeder..never see them killing mice. btw way have you ever tried to catch a feral cat to help it? Good luck with that. People complain about cats for a good reason. They should not be allowed to run loose. Keep the cat in the house or on a leash that is what I have to do with my Chihuahua..

This is pathetic and I hope something is done before someone loses their life.

Why doesn't the Family Practice office inside the Barberton Hospital have an accurate time sign on its doors? We went over there on Thursday afternoon to get a blood pressure checked, and sat on the outside for three quarters of an hour until we finally found out that no doctors would be in that afternoon! So we went to the Emergency Room to find out if they would just take the blood pressure there, but it was an absolute zoo. We left. Found a pharmacy with one of those machines, frowned, but used it anyway. Will somebody PLEASE put an accurate sign up at the Family Practice? Barberton Beautification- My kids DO play in my yard, & at the parks, but they do like to roller skate, play hop scotch, and draw with chalk on sidewalks. Gee what you never played on sidewalks growing up? What a pitty. You have turned into a stick in the mud. You forgot what it was like to be little and have fun.I will say my son found needles at a School playground and has seen teens smoking at the parks. I do NOT want my kids around this. Would you want your grand kids or children to get hurt by a dirty needle? People complain enough about todays kids I blame the parents for not teaching respect for themselves and the environment. I do not want my kids playing in places where they are not supervised. Which means I would rather have them play on the side walk in front of my home if I had one. So If I complain of not having a sidewalk for my kids to play on or other kids to walk on then maybe the city will do something about it. I pay taxes.

Submitted By: Barberton Beautification Submitted: 7/26/2010
@ FLOOD ZONE RES, your kids should be playing in their yard or at the local park. Sidewalks and streets are not for this purpose. This town has very nice and localized parks for the kids. Seems this generation of youngsters is too lazy to go to the parks. They gravitate to places that are unsafe or invading on the neighbors. As for the medical bills, by bringing this up is an example of why people should protect themselves. Some people would love to file a claim against a homeowner's insurance policy. It's this mentality that makes me keep the un-supervised youngsters off my property.

I completely agree with those in the flood zone areas that the city needs to seriously think about fixing the problems in. Consider the fact that they have been collecting $5.00 a month on our water bills for quite a few years now that was supposed to be going towards those issues and so far nothing has been done yet. Now, they want to force people to fix something on a limited income. I once lived in the area that is the flood zone, and that extends out to 21st Street, NW. The city decided in one rainstorm in Aug., 2007 to have the fire department pull electric meters, now, this then defeats the purpose of your sump pump working when you cut the electric to it. They pulled mine, flooded my basement, ruined my hot water tank, damaged items that I was storing there, and cost me several hundred dollars in clean-ups and repairs to my furnace and basement and the insurance company for the city wouldn't even pay a single penny to reimburse me for the damage they did intentionally to my property. Needless to say, I left shortly after that to a better neighborhood here in town.

It is a childish mentality to point out standing water, sidewalks, etc. Grow up and take a little pride in your property. By the way, I am sure you could get a prime rate on flood insurance to cover the waters of the mighty Wolfe Creek. Unbelievable !

Can the city do something about the skunks in the area of 8th NW and Hopocan streets? Nearly every night if one isn't hit by a car it is caught by a dog or even shot at. Last night one got caught by a neighbors cat right outside my window. I could hear the skunk screaming for it life. I hope it doesn't have rabies as I am sure it bit this cat. A good reason to not let your cat run loose as they are pests too. Having to close windows in the heat of the night is bad but the skunk smell is overwhelming. It ruined a good nights sleep. Who would I contact from the city to set traps and dispose of these skunk?

Well, I see we made the papers about going ward by ward citing residents for yards and houses that need minor repairs and major repairs. Well where is the report card for Barberton? Who is citing them? The roads are horrible, flood areas like 14th St to 17th St between Hopocan & Wooster Rd still flood, and many street do not have sidewalks for residents to walk on or children to play on? Please Barbertons heart is in the right spot, but before they point fingers they need to look at themselves first.

You just went through our neighborhood and issues letters stating to fix up our homes on 14th St. This is a flood zone area. Why fix it when you have not fixed the flooding issues? It defeats the purpose. So until you fix the flooding issues which you have promised for decades then why should be fix our homes that will one day get washed away when Wolfe Creek floods and the sewers back up.

The City wants to raise money? Well Winter is almost 5 months away. So why not start thinking about ticketing people who are parking on both sides on the streets on side streets especially in the winter. People have drive ways but they are to lazy to shovel them. You can barely get down the street when they park on both sides. Let alone when they park right in front of your driveway. Sometime you cannot get out without almost clipping the car. People are rude. Growing up in other cities they only allow you to park on one side of the street. Maybe Barberton should learn from other cities.

Megan, I am sorry that you were a crime victim. I would bet serious money that theft goes up during summer month's due to the kids being on vacation. The police dept needs to start showing more authority on street patrols and enforcing the curfew laws and hopefully the crime rate would go down. Preventive crime measures in this town is non existant. Call the dispatcher some time with a complaint and they act like you have disturbed them in some way. They need better response to complaints WHILE THEY ARE IN PROGRESS. What ever happened to curfew laws for minors?

Those 2 complaints about the postal service are absurd. Sounds like Steve D created an obstruction to his mail box possibly and Linda M did not have the proper authority/paper work submitted like power of attorney? Just a hunch. Remember folks, the mail is federal government and that's no joking matter. I feel the local post office does a fine job on delivery, just a little under staffed at the service window.

I think maybe the President of the League should take some of the thousands of dollars that was raised at the Reverse Raffle and put a article in the Herald explaining what the boards intentions are for all the money. I think this would really help the citizens of Barberton understand where there money is going. I'm just saying....

A city full of potholes, patchwork paving everywhere. So where are the City crews paving a whole street? The answer is Lambert Street, just a block from the Akron City limit. How many houses? none, no one lives on this street, it is basically the entrance to two business. No patch work like in front of all our houses, or the Streets we drive every- day. No, just two places that are more important than the rest of the Citizens of Barberton. Great decision, again.

I have to agree with Carol about the treatment at The Barberton Health Clinic. I too was treated badly. I never used a free clinic until that day. I have to go back in a few weeks and I hope I am treated with respect..it is the only care I have right now. The Dr who saw me cut me off in mid sentence started talking to me like I was a complete idiot. He judged me without even asking questions. He told me to drink more water and consider getting an air conditioner.. If he would have asked I would have told him I drink 6-8 glasses a day but he assumed my problems were because I don't drink enough water..I felt worse after I left than when I went in. I do not go to a doctor..unless I absolutely need one and have never been treated like that in my life. But there was no doubt what he meant with his condescending tone and you are wasting my time attitude. He didn't even ask me one question before he gave his opinion on why I was sick...I was there for HBP med. I also mentioned how my dizzy spells are he, "that kind doesn't happen until after 80y". Well I am not anywhere near 80..I can only guess he was implying I was lying.I was there also to ask about rapid heartbeat..but I was never able to ask since he left the room and a "student" listen to my heart and breathing. First do no harm..is a myth..But doctors should, first ask questions then answer without judgement.

The sick, lame, deaf, blind and seriously ill people have a proposition for the Living Word Church: The Living Word Church, located 375 E. Tuscarawus Ave., Barberton, OH is advertising on their sign the ability to work miracles and heal people. Their sign reads: July-God Does Miracles-Healing Service-Bring The Hurting. Their service times are 10:30 am on Sunday and 6:30 pm on Wednesday. The “hurting” would like to invite their alleged miracle worker to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, OH where plenty of patients and their families would like to see some immediate healing performed. I already know the Living Word Church will not show up, because they really can’t heal people. Nobody today has the ability to perform miracles as they have served their purpose (1 Cor. 13:8-10; Jn. 20:30-31). Why do you suppose alleged miracle workers are not healing in hospitals, nursing homes or any other public place? Because they can’t! Don’t be deceived. Keith Welch

All I was saying is that the money that is paid for these children to play isn't going to where it needs to go to. There is no reason why these kids can't play on the nice fields that are in Barberton. No they got stuck with some rinky dink fields behind U.L Light. Now those fields are no longer available to them. Where are they going to play? I also agree with you Magic Man, I think these kids should also have to do something extra for the enrollment fee, such as selling candy, mugs, and coupon books ect.

I referred my daughter, a single mom working a part time job for the last 5 months, previously unemployed for 2 years, to the Community Health Clinic in Barberton. She showed up in severe pain begging to be seen by a Dr. She was treated very badly and was told that she needed to tell her mother not to refer people to them! So my daughter went to the Barberton Emergency Room where she was immediately given a room and was seen by not only a nurse but then a Dr. within the hour. She was given relief from a sever inner ear infection. And referred to the Community Health Clinic for a follow up visit! The same organization that had refused her 2 hours earlier. I left worky as soon as I could and went to the health clinic to see if I could be of any help to my daughter. When I walked in, there were approximately 7 patients in there. I seen one Dr., 2 nurses and 3 receptionists. Nobody spoke to me for 2 minutes! Not the Dr. I passed in the entry way or the 3 receptionists. They seemed to be having social hour behind the desk. When I was spoken to it was in a very harsh agressive tone, "DO YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT"! I wanted to tuck my tail between my legs and run as fast as I could. I asked if my daughter had been there and explained to them who she was and why I had sent her down there and that I work for a local company that donates linens to them. Her response, "DO YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT, AND IF YOU DON'T THEN YOUR NOT GOING TO BE SEEN BY A DR. AND WE HAVEN'T SEEN YOUR DAUGHTER, SEE SHE'S NOT SIGNED IN". A man in the waiting room told me she didn't get signed in because she appeared to be in a lot of pain a couldn't get past the front desk. In these hard economic times lets stick together and help each other. And whatever your policies and procedures are the least you can do is treat your neighbor with human decency. None of us are beyond being unemployed, without health insurance and in pain and in desperate need of medical attention. Now she will have a hospital emergency room visit bill that undoubtly the tax payers will end up paying. It's easier(especially when your sick and in pain) to go to the emergency room and apply for assistance on the bill than it is to go downtown to the health clinic where you need a briefcase of financial history, identity, utility bill and yes, AN APPOINTMENT! And lets be aware of the foundations we give our money to, they are not all worthy.

@Baseball_Mom, are you kidding by breaking down those financial numbers? What a joke! I think $65/per kid these days is a bargain. When I was a kid, they made you go out and sell candy, mugs, coupon books, etc and we still paid a per kid fee. I am a former player who played beyond high school levels and all of this stems from the coaches not playing all the kids and maybe some kids are not that talented. Not all kids can be all stars. I have to say that my son played in the BALL league 2yrs ago, and it seems like nothing has changed. Before anyone starts in on me... I was a very involved parent and my husband was also. We helped coach, clean fields, pick up trash... you name it we did it. Now when my son played we had to pay $65.oo for him to play. That included a shirt and hat. Please explain to me where all the other monies went to? I know that the league only pays $11.oo per child for insurance through the little league charter. I know it doesn't cost that much to mow all the fields, oh wait there is only 2 that they played on! Now lets do some math here, you have to have at least 9 kids on a team and they are paying (2yrs ago) $65.oo to play thats $585.oo per team. When my son played there were 5 teams in his age division that $2925.oo. Thats not including the coach pitch or the t-ball teams, oh and the challenger team. So again tell me where the money goes? It sure didn't go to the fields or the Umpires. I am not sure if the same person is president of the BALL league, but I can tell you as a parent of a child that pays to play ball can request to see tax reports for that year. So you can see for yourself where the money is NOT going. As for joining the board in the BALL league that in its self is a joke! You have to be voted in and if you ruffled anyones feathers during the season or not, you aren't getting on that board!

I cannot believe all of the bickering in the local baseball league's. Both sides have good points but the bottom line is POLITICS AND FAVORITES exist in every town at all levels. If your kid is a phenom they get red carpet treatment, plain and simple. Anyone who devotes their time for no pay should not be looked down upon. If you can do better, then "step up to the plate" and do so. Lastly, if your kid is being bullied by fellow players, maybe they should be taking golf lessons? Just a thought.

Norton b-ball isn't any better. There is only one purpose of the game...WIN. Sorry coaches winning isnt't everything. fundamentals and teaching a young boy how to be a good ball player is. Then boys are allowed to play on the team and bully the other kids and get away with it. No penalties, they don't even have to sit a game out. What does this teach our youth? I thought sports meant good sportsmanship, and teamwork, and team moral. Guess that doesn't matter anymore. As long as you have solid pitching the rest of the young boys can play with the daisies in the outfield. Then if your child has to miss a game for an emergency in the family, he is ousted from playing the rest of the play-off games. So you tell me, is this fair?

I feel compelled to address all of the negative comments that are always addressed to the folks who run BALL. If you have not held a VOLUNTEER position on their board, you would not know what costs are involved. They seem to be the only organization that has utilities to pay, fuel for the grass to be mowed and the insurance that covers the kids and volunteers. With them losing the fields behind UL Light this year, they seem to have had to dig deep into their pockets to make the fields they had work for everyone. If you are so unhappy, step up and volunteer or join their board, otherwise, if you cannot step up to help, you have no right to complain. Thank you to all that do volunteer, the kids really appreciate it.

One of the issues with B.A.L.L. is their umpiring. While EVERY other league pays umpires (35-45 per game), the Barberton league does not. It leads one to wonder where all the monies from team sponsors and registration fees are going. (Players are only supplied a cap and t-shirt... at a cost of $10-$15 per player). How solid can a league be if the umpires are unknowledgeable dads and older brothers of the players? Poor leadership leads to a poor feeder system.

EVERY high school program has politics and favorites. The baseball team was mediocre due to the talent on the field. I watched a few games just because I live in the neighborhood. Barberton is no longer one of the biggest schools around like back in the 70's and 80's. I believe they are leaving the suburban league and that should help them compete on a better level. You have to have good lower level "feeder systems" to develop the kids. With out that, not even Joe Torre could manage a winning season for the Magics.

Congratulations to the Barberton Little League for another horrendous season. Once again a combination of no leadership and no coaching has given our boys of summer another mediocre season. The only skills that were improved was the coaches bickering with each other. It is time for new leadership and coaches who actually care for all of their players, not just their own kids. We lost three more youth fields this year. Next we will be losing all of our players to other cities that offer better programs. Something needs to be done before it is to late, if it isn't already.

While driving by Tusc. park my husband noticed that trash had been mowed over on the grass. I wonder why the city worker who mowed over it didn't simply just pick the trash up first? Is it not his job? Does he have no common sense? Or will it simply be blamed on budget cuts to the parks dept.? None of these excuses are plausable. It's a shame that we employ people in this city who take such little pride, not only in a job well done, but also in the city which employs them.

I have lived in Barberton for sixteen years now. I have watched the city decline in standards for some time now. Citizens are forced to keep their property up while others do it becauses they want their property to look nice. I do not understand why AMHA property tenants seem to have more rights than tax paying citizens who purchased a home in this town. If you contact AMHA nothing happens and the police really do not want to be bothered.I am not saying all tenants are the same I just live next to one that has not had a job in years. Why would he or she want to work. They get to keep me up all night and sleep when I go to work. I guess someone is enjoying my tax contribution. The Mayor promissed to clean the town up and I have only seen a few drug houses boarded up. As for the bar by the ballfield: I prefer the nice artwork to just plain white with cracks, weeds, and graffiti. As for the topic: it is a BAR. What would you expect on a bar? Please, no chickens, no swans. Have you seen the other side of the building? Great work there!

Although I'm sure the artist is very talented, the paintings on the side wall at the Innfield are not attractive and should be removed. A nice clean maintained building would be much nicer.

I was traveling through Barberton when i noticed the murals outside of the Innfield Grill. I just had to take some pictures of the artwork!! Well the owner came outside and invited us in to see the murals on the inside. Wow is all i can say. This is a classy place and anyone who hasn't seen the inside needs to stop by to at least look at the art. I asked who the artist was and it was Ralf Hersog. Hes a local fellow and probly one of the best artist of our time around Ohio, maybe the country.

Welcome to the wonderful season of Barberton little league baseball. As the mother of a 3rd yr player I must say how very disappointed I am in most of the adults involved in the 2010 season. People these games are about the kids not about you. Petty arguments going on, on and off the field. I see the majority of these kids getting along very well even though they are in competition with each other. But that won't last for long, soon you will have the kids going at each other because the adults in this league can't conduct themselves properly. Sad to say, but the kids take losing a game better than the parents do. Grow up!!!

It seems that the Norton School Board just doesn't understand the meaning of the word NO! We have defeated the school levy twice in less than one year, so what do they do? They file again for the lesser known August election, for yes, another levy! They are telling the residents, in essence, that we don't care what you say. We want your money, and will get it eventually. Even if we have to be sneaky and keep spending money to get your money. 1st levy - signs everywhere... 2nd levy - just a mere handful... Wanna wager that for the Aug election, there isn't a word from the Board publicly? At least, until after this gets out, again.

Update on the chaos at glenn st and newton. One of the kids about got killed while going down the hill over 30 mph on a bike. He was going thru the stop signs. He actually crashed and should have been taken to emergency. If this keeps up, Children's Services will be contacted. The blue house on glenn st, you know who you are. PLEASE, control your children, one almost got killed!

We hear about making the Barberton Schools, the schools of choice. It will never happen as long as our board is too lazy and also using their own personal agendas to rein in the Tiger Woods in the district, and the man who seems to relish destroying morale in every area of the district. A good part of that it through untrue embellishments. It is very sad to see what the board has allowed the district to become, and it is only because of their being lazy and worse.

I was visiting someone in the hospital over the weekend and I saw an older gentleman waddling along the hallway that goes to and from the South Elevator to the Main Doors. The poor man was obviously tired and in pain from whatever was wrong in his leg. I spoke to him, he really wanted to sit down and rest, but there was no place there. He had to waddle all the way down to the waiting room at the entrance. Now, for me, it is nothing to walk from entrance to the south elevators, but this made me think. How many people want to visit but can't make it to the south elevators? Perhaps the hospital could make a door closer to the elevators for people who can't walk that far. I didn't ask him how he made it to his relative's room once he got off the elevator. I just hoped the room was close to the elevator. If he had to waddle all the way to the farthest room, poor man! Kudos to him for the effort!

Ben, you want to see chaos, drive up to glenn st & newton. There is ALWAYS 5-10 kids in the street and not an adult is sight. Most of these kids are under the age of 12. Does anyone pay attention to the intersection of fourth and Norton at about 2:30? Kids just cross the street whether they have the crossing signal or not. It is a minor miracle that nobody has been hit yet. They have no regard for traffic and walk out in front of cars, holding up traffic because of their ignorance. Either teach them what walk/don't walk lights look like or have an adult out their to monitor this. Oh that's right, we're cutting back on that. Mark my words, a child WILL be hit.

about political signs. I was in the building inspector's office one day getting a permit, when he got off the phone with a concerned citizen as yourself about the signs, and I inquired myself. I was told, at present there are NO regulations at all, about how early a sign can be posted, how many, how big, or when to take them down. I think citizens should get a petition going for a regulation to be passed regarding this matter. Politicians should have to answer to a set of rules that affect the appearance of our city in such a negative manner. I'd say no sooner than 30 days prior, no more than 2 signs per yard, a size restriction, and removed within 48 hours or fined. We have rules for other signs, real estate, business, yard sales, why not political?

In regards to the poster regarding the alcohol consumption in the Loyal Oak area. Tenants do have a right called "quiet enjoyment" regarding the property being rented. They are not breaking the law until they are intoxicated in public or operating a vehicle under the influence. These 2 situations are best left up to the local Police to decide. Which by the way, I have been told Norton does a very fine job. Just be careful casting the first stone. These situations can get hairy !!

I have a Question maybe someone out there who is a Landlord would know about. I have been very concerned about a Loyal Oak Business serving free BEER, and this is NOT a Bar or Restaurant establishment. Now, I know housing landlords can stipulate rules in their contracts like, No pets, No children etc... but when I went to the Landlord who is renting this small building to this business owner, he told me he cannot impose any restrictions on a Business rental agreement. I seem to find that hard to believe! If that's the case, why couldn't I rent a space somewhere and turn it into an indoor petting zoo and let the animals defecate the premises? SURELY any Landlord can implement any kind of guidelines for their Renters This small business is contributing to drunk driving, with free BEER, people will drink past their limit. yet the Landlord tells me, nothing he can do about it, not even say, I would prefer you did not consume alcohol in my building. is this TRUE?

There is an ordinance with guidelines outlining what size signs can be and Otterman and milkovich are both in violation. So why hasn;t the city addressed these signs since they have been up for a month now? Maybe because they are all Democrats?

Sherrie, you make a good point but I have seen numerous things done by the city and then the kids vandalize these efforts. Why do you think the city has added cameras at the parks? I would get city approval and organize a few fund raisers. The Vegas Night type fund raisers do very well. With today's economy, I have to back the cities efforts in watching expenditures for such projects.

Concerened citizen has a very good point. We need to start a blog so that all parents can be informed of the goings on in our school system. It seems to me that the board is more concerned about the appearence of our schools than what is being taught in them. We can build buildings, but my child can't bring a book home because there aren't enough to go around. I know of one teacher that consistantly does not enter all grades and students have to do assignments over to get credit. This has been confirmed with several other parents. I have another child that earned A/B average all year in 8th,9th, & 11th grade in english, but while in 10th could hardly get a C except while the student teacher was grading and recording the scores. Then it went back up to A/B again, all while earning an A in spanish in 10th. Makes me wonder about that english teacher's ability to teach.

What in the world is going on in our shcool system? I have concerns with the middle school. My son was assaulted at school in front of teachers and I was not informed. When I spoke with his teacher, I was told that he was an extremely well behaved student, and that the other student involved has been in trouble several times. So why are the guidance office and the principal accusing my son of "bringing this on himself"? This instance with my son, and then reading the other remarks makes me question the competence of those in charge.

I would like to see the Herald get more involved with the complaints regarding the high school teacher issues. The majority do a wonderful job, however I have personal experience teachers in their 20's. They dress like they are going to a dance club. My advice to the two previous posters, you have strength in numbers. Get organized and start with the superintendent. If that fails, maybe 19 news could turn this conduct and dress code issue into some good TV.

I am concerned about the character of the High School staff. It has been brought to my attention that students and parents have complained about a teacher showing tattoos located in private areas, to entire classes. There was also an incident of a teacher walking around class in an undergarment, without a shirt, exposing the midriff area. When incidents of misconduct was brought to the attention of their superiors, the parents and students were informed that nothing could be done due to the tenure of the employee. I would like to know what the Schools are planning to do to resolve this.

There is so much negative in the world today it is nice to have a story that makes you smile. Barberton Speedway opened on April 10th, with the opening night came a lot of kids, looking for a fun filled evening and with the help of our drivers and others we had over 3000 filled eggs and prizes. It was great and if anyone has any pictures of the Easter Egg hunt, drop off a picture at the office and lets try to get it in the paper. Barberton Speedway is trying to make this a family atmosphere offering Kids night and Specials. Not to mention the racing. By the way the guy that comes out to take the pictures from the Herald does a great job and gets good pictures. I heard the Herald was going to be set up at the track to promote subscriptions. Please let us know when I would come up to subscribe it would beat stopping Thursday at the local Circle K. Thanks Again and Thank you for sharing all those great stories.

I haven't had a chance to read the Herald electronically for some time now. "WOW", the site is much more organized, easier to locate information, more personal, offers more 'community' related features than other electronic newspapers, all of which unsuspectingly gets the reader more involved in their community. As for the electronic petition regarding the Mayor's agenda to eliminate the Barberton Health Department. What a great idea! This electronic petition offers Barberton citizens an opportunity, probably the only opportunity, to voice their opinion regarding the issue! TY

Terry, I guess you do not read the Beacon Journal, Trading Post, West Side Leader, South Side Leader and Barberton Herald. There have been articles and letters about this levy in all of these papers including last Sunday. There is nothing low key about this levy. This is a bond issue to build a high school and stadium not an operating issue so "If the Board cannot operate on the funds they already receive, then they need to make cutbacks" does not apply to this issue.

Chuck - you sound like the typical liberal. You think what you perceive as fact to be fact. I live in Norton, have 2 children in the school system, and know what is going on within it, for my children's sake. I know how the shady side of politics works within this city. If the keywords 'Norton School Levy' do not produce search results, then there are no results. The bottom line is that the School Board is going low key, especially compared to the Nov election, in hope a low turnout will ensure them the win. Maybe a wealthy person such as yourself can afford to be taxed to death, but I need to feed and clothe my children, as most residents unlike your deep pocketed self. If the Board cannot operate on the funds they already receive, then they need to make cutbacks, just as us taxpayers have had to. Lastly, you are correct on one point. Debating this with you is getting inane. Take your blinders off and see reality.

The info has been reported in board meeting reports by the newspapers (Herald and WSL) The Beacon did a story abour Norton, Coventry and Manchester having levy requests. I am not a voice for anyone. I just tire of people throwing around baseless accusations to paint the situation in a way that gets people to vote the way you want. Since you insist on continuing to use opinion instead of fact to make your point, our little dialogue is a wate of time. It is obvious that you don't care about the truth. My hope is the voters will base their vote on the issue. Is it needed? Is it affordable to them? Only each person can answer that question for themselves. That is the only issue here. This will be my last comment towards you, sir, on this matter.

Chuck - There is no archive record for the Beacon or the Herald on this levy since the Nov election. Yes, they must discuss this issue at the public meeting, but since not many of the voting public attend these meetings, they are uninformed. If, as you say, you spoke with a Board member, and they do not know the election rules, then we have some uneducated Board members, and they need to be removed. It took me 2 phone calls. One to the Elections Board, and one to Norton City Hall to find this information out. I too, have spoken with a Board member who informed me that they will wait as near the election date as possible to go public with this. The last levy was outlined in the Herald and the Beacon 5 weeks prior to the last election. I believe you are a mouthpiece for the Board, trying to paint them in a good light. You defend them, I will call them out. Play ball!

Terry, The schools have to discuss and vote on all aspects of levies in a public meeting. They have since January, had something to do with the bond issue on the agenda and it has been reported by the West Side Leader and the Barberton Herald. There have been at least three meetings where info has been written by the reporter and printed. A survey on the school website gave feedback from voters. The survey also told which plan and the accompanying cost. That is what they chose. The Beacon Journal also ran a story. They have started a Facebook page and the levy committee have ordered signs and fliers. All of this was ordered before your comments. I talked to a board member about the rule of 30 days before an election. They still believe that is the case, so you won't see any signs before then.

An alarming discovery. Upon attempting to research police reports, I was told by the officer at the station, that all reports from 2001 prior are LOST on an old computer system, they can no longer access. It seems to me, this could be a serious flaw that could interfere with FBI and even, although I hope not, Homeland Security Issues. I would think they would be Required by Federal Law to maintain these records. I work on computers myself, so I know this is NOT an impossible task. There are even companies out there, that can retrieve data from a dead HD. You would think the PD is also required to keep backups. I don't want a scandal, our City has suffered enough bad light. But I think it is in Every Citizen's best interest, this potentially embarrassing problem be rectified.

Chuck - I know I am not wrong. Maybe these posts will spurn them to come out, but as for now, it is still low key. They can explain it, but they know they cannot sell it. Voters showed that the greedy extra half percent income tax the City levied on us was part of it's demise last Nov. I have entered the Norton School Levy into the search engines of both this publication and the local Akron paper. No results on either site. Care to cite what papers have had, as you put it, quite alot of info? I am curious...

Terry, I have been attaching my name. Why it hasn't printed, not sure. I know you are wrong. This issue needs to be explained and properly sold to voters. The board has already had quite a lot of info in newspapers. There will be much forthcoming. It is good for citizens to have a dose of skepticism towards local government, but let's not think that every elected body is corrupt. If this fails, the schools will go on. It is not a do or die situation. Mr. Foore, take some time to understand the needs and see what they are proposing. Then make up your own mind as to what is best for the community. If it is no then vote no. But stop slandering some good, honest people who are doing what they think is best for our kids.

The School Bond issue is no different than the Health Care bill. It will be pushed at us at every turn, no matter how much the majority does not want it. We are going to be taxed to death until we can no longer afford to feed our children.

The School Board knows the rules, even if the general public does not. Bet ya we will not see any advertising by the Board regarding this issue. They know it is an 'off' election and are counting on low turnout. I guess we will see in the next few weeks. I will concede my error if wrong. But I bet I won't have the need. (At least I will attach my name to my posts)

Terry, Relax. Many people have that belief that yard signs cannot be put out until 30 days before an election. That is beside the point. The reason there are no yard signs promoting the levy yet is due to that belief (obviously wrong) about the rules. It is not as Mr. Foore asserted, an attempt to sneak by the voters. Many of the voters want to see the bond issue passed and are working toward that. The campaign will have signs, flyers, etc.. so all people can make an informed, educated decision to support or not support the issue. Nothing sneaky here. That is the point being made.

Recently I visited Summa Barberton Citizens Hospital. The hospital is "smoke free", which is as it should be. I am wondering, however, at the number of vending machines where candy, pop and other unhealthy snacks are sold. Given the current obesity problem being focused upon in America I would think the hospital of all places should set the pace by removing these health hazards rather than profit by their sale. The hospital should not show hypocrisy and should ban such items from its premises. Health issues are not only related to us smokers!

Regarding the Norton Fire Dept 'Breaking Ground'. When did they approve a contract to build? Last we heard, they were just asking for bids. If they hadn't intentionally let the old one rot, it would still be standing.

Cindy - you are wrong - The County Elections Board says that all municipalities make their own rules regarding sings. The City of Norton has no time limits. Their only limit is that the signs are not in the right-of-way. Research before you comment.

Regarding the Norton Bond issue, county rules say that yard signs cannot be put out until one month before the election. No one is trying to sneak through an issue on the ballot.

Mr. Foore, you are wrong in your note to Norton residents. The Norton School board is not sneaking anything by the voters. They have been very public in their attempts to pass a bond issue. They have cut the millage almost in half and scaled back the project in response to voters who told them they saw the need and wanted to support it but could not afford the amount being asked. Nothing sneaky here.

I was so excited to be able to read the first on-line issue. I live in Australia and even though I stay in touch with my B'town crowd, this was awesome! Thank you!!

I happen to have an inside track to the Public Bidding sector for construction projects and I recently found out that our 10-year-old high school is going to get a new roof put on. In fact, a 1.8 million dollar project to be exact. How is it that a new school had a roof that failed so soon?

Submitted By: Terry Foore Submitted: 3/3/2010
NOTE ALL NORTON RESIDENTS:: The Norton School Board has 'slipped' the levy onto the May ballot. They are intentionally NOT putting up yard signs or advertisements in a sneaky attempt to get it passed.
